Mercabarna, whose company name is ‘Mercados de Abastecimientos de Barcelona, SA, is the Food park management company which is responsible for concentrating and managing the wholesale markets in the city of Barcelona and its surroundings.
This huge market covers an area of almost 1,100,000 m², is divided into three main sectors and has fruit and vegetable, meat, fish, flower and dairy marketsin which more than 600 wholesale companies carry out their activities.

This integration, formalized on January 1, 2025, represents a step forward in the consolidation of a sustainable and transparent energy model that prioritizes proximity and services to citizens.
With this new addition Barcelona Energia manages a total of 53 energy delivery points in Mercabarna, where the main public markets and facilities are located: the Central Fish Market, the Central Fruit and Vegetable Market, the Bio Market, administrative offices, restaurant areas and multifunctional areas. This collaboration will enable the company – which annually consumes an amount of electricity equivalent to 1,500 families – to further reduce its carbon footprint. 403,938 kg by CO₂ per year, a figure equivalent to the plantation of more than 1,800 trees.

This new entry into Barcelona Energía is formalized within a broader strategy of the public electricity company, which already provides services in 12 metropolitan municipalities, in addition to the Barcelona City Council: Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Vicenç dels Horts, Esplugues de Llobregat , Sant Just Desvern, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, El Papiol, Castellbisbal, Barberà del Vallès, Pallejà, Santa Coloma de Cervelló and Torrelles de Llobregat, the last three, were founded at the end of 2024. These agreements are also a new example of the trust received from public authorities and underline Barcelona Energia’s vocation to public service, highlighting his commitment to the environment and the energy transition.
