Donald Trump withdraws the US from the Paris Agreement

DONALD TRUMP, IN HIS SECOND PRESIDENTIAL TERM, WITHDRAWN THE UNITED STATES FROM THE PARIS AGREEMENT, UNDERMINING GLOBAL EFFORTS AGAINST THE CLIMATE CRISIS. THE DECISION, AMID CONTROVERSIES AND GROWING ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS, COMPETES THE URGENCY OF SUSTAINABILITY WITH THE EXPANSION OF FOSSIL ENERGY PROMOTED BY HIS ADMINISTRATION

A few hours after his inauguration, Donald Trump signed the withdrawal of the United States fromParis Agreement on the climate, marking a dangerous step backwards in the fight against climate change. With a letter to the United Nations to formally notify the withdrawal, the United States is once again targeting fossil fuels, canceling Biden’s environmentalist policies and jeopardizing global efforts for a more sustainable future. Trump’s decision marks a significant step backwards in international cooperation.

2024 hottest year ever documented

Over the previous year, the planet has passed for the first time the critical threshold of an increase of 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. High temperatures, extreme hurricane-force winds and drought are the climatic conditions linked to the changes. The same ones that caused the fires that attacked Los Angeles in California.

These events caused around thirty deaths and damage estimated at 250 billion dollars. Trump, however, a few days after the tragedy, exploited the disastrous event to spread misinformation and fuel political divisions.

Trump, clean energy “new green scam”

In his second term, the USA, the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, exits the Paris Agreement, the central objective of The Donald’s electoral program.

The American Tycoon’s plan opposes the previous Biden government’s efforts to promote clean energy, initiatives that Trump himself has called “the new green scam”. The 47th president of the United States has therefore promised to remove all restrictions on the fossil fuel industry and to increase oil drilling, without any limits. The retreat will take approximately a year to complete.

Trump’s decision compromises the fight against the climate crisis

This choice weakens global efforts to limit greenhouse gas emissions, further compromising the fight against the climate crisis.

Lorenzo Orsenigo, president ofSustainable Infrastructure Association (AIS)condemned this decision, stating that Italy cannot follow such an example. Orsenigo highlighted how catastrophic events, such as the fires in Los Angeles and Valencia, are clear signs of the urgency of action.

Therefore, he highlighted that our country, thanks to the PNRR, has a unique opportunity to invest in sustainable infrastructure. These not only improve environmental resilience, but also represent a powerful driver for economic growth.

Every euro invested in green infrastructure can generate up to seven euros of economic value, promoting employment and accelerating the ecological transition. Through the adoption of the Envision Protocol, successfully applied in over 30 Italian projects, it is demonstrated that sustainability is not only an environmental necessity, but also a strategic lever for development.

Sustainable infrastructure is key to building a resilient future, capable of addressing climate and social challenges, while ensuring lasting benefits for future generations.

«We cannot afford to take steps backwards: it is time to act, with a strong and concrete commitment. We are working to build a better world for the new generations, committing ourselves to ensure that our model of sustainable development becomes a fundamental resource for the well-being and security of our country and the entire planet”concluded Orsenigo.
