Funds for the prevention of forest fires in the mountains of rural Asturian parishes

And forest fire is a fire that spreads without control and burns forest land that was not meant to burn. In addition to the obvious forest and environmental damage caused by these events, we must add the consequences on the civilian population and their property and on local biodiversity.

The Prevention is the set of measures taken to avoid, counteract or reduce a risk.. Fire prevention aims to prevent fires from occurring and, if they do occur, to put out fires quickly and efficiently and protect people, biodiversity, forest areas and material assets.

Asturias: prevention of forest fires in mountains

The Ministry of Rural Environment and Agrarian Policy will allocate 1.3 million to the prevention of fires in mountains in rural parishes. This measure pursues a better defense of natural spaceswhich slows down the advance of the fire and makes its spread difficult.

Through an agreement signed by the 39 rural parishes of the community, the Principality will dedicate 441,500 euros annually until 2026 to these local entities, in order for them to program, coordinate and execute measures that prevent the proliferation of fire, such as removal of combustible material and cleaning of access roads to farms and pastures. It also seeks to create protection strips between the trees and reduce biofuel in strategic areasrunway margins, etc.

The Minister of Rural Environment and Agrarian Policy, Marcelino Marcos, accompanied by the general director of Forest Management, Javier Vigil, presented this plan today in Pravia to representatives of the rural parishes, which is financed by the European Agrarian Fund for Rural Development ( EAFRD) and that is key to the economic and environmental development of the mountains.

The global budget will be distributed among all local entities, depending on parameters such as the size of the parishes, the forest areathe slope of the land or the size of the pastures. For the distribution of funds, it will also be taken into account whether the space is part of the Natura 2000 network.

Improvement of rural access

The counselor has also visited the latest works carried out by his department in the council in Pravia. It is about two actions that will improve access to the town of Forcinas and the Eucaliptón track. The first has had an investment of 18,325 euros to repair the concrete road that leads to the town.

For its part, the conditioning of the Eucaliptón dirt track, which crosses a public utility mountain, has cost 34,969 euros. The works have consisted of concreting of two kilometers of runway with a width of 2.5 meters.
