The Santa Giulia Museum of Brescia hosted the great finissage of the competition “The green Renaissance”An initiative that combined Brescia art with the themes of sustainability, celebrating the future through creative recovery and commitment to the environment
On January 30, 2025, the competition took place “The green Renaissance”, dedicated to students of the Brescia art schools. The project had the main objective to stimulate the creativity of young artists, inviting them to create works solely with recycled materials.
The event, the Santa Giulia Museuman emblematic place, which houses centuries of historical memory and art. Inside, the building welcomes the exposure “The Renaissance in Brescia. Moretto, Romanino, Savoldo 1512-1552 “(open until February 16, 2025), a celebration of local artists who deeply influenced Renaissance painting.
In this context, the competition gave students the opportunity to rework the Renaissance, not only as a period of great aesthetic value, but also as a symbol of rebirth, which today interpreted in an ecological key.
To promote the initiative, a company of the leading place in the sector of the recovery and disposal of special waste.
An evening of prizes and awards
The great finissage of the event took place with a award ceremony that saw the participation of numerous guests, including local institutional figures, experts in the artistic and cultural sector, and representatives of the schools involved in the competition.
To win the first prize of 500 euros, Pietro Signorini, Andrea Grande and Pietro Scilingo of the Leonardo high school, for their work “Black waters”. This work has aroused the applause of the jury for its ability to combine typical Renaissance elements with contemporary ecological messages, using in a creative and symbolic way materials of recycling.
The second prize, worth 400 euros, was awarded to Anna Carpanese, of the Laba school, for the work “Uterus”an intense and significant reflection on the female figure and sustainability.
The third prize, of 300 euros, went to Afzal Aneqa, Chiarini Elisa and spoons Miriam, always from the Leonardo high school, for their work “Atlas”an interesting interpretation of the concept of mapping and our impact on the natural world.
Honor mention to “The nest”
In addition, an honorable mention was attributed to the work “The nest”, Made by Ludovica Gasparetti, Arianna Massardi, Agnese Varini and Emma Calzolari, who distinguished himself for the poetic approach and ecological sensitivity of the project. This work has moved for its ability to transmit emotions related to the concept of nature and protection of the environment.
The jury, chaired by Prof. Roberta D’Adda, coordinator of the Collections and Research sector of the Santa Giulia Museum and curator of the exhibition “The Renaissance in Brescia”has praised not only the artistic quality of the works but also their strong symbolic component. Each job has represented a reflection on our responsibility for the environment and the future that we want to build.
The jury stressed that the competition managed to combine art and ecological commitment, highlighting how recycling is not only a recovery practice, but a means of regenerating and giving new life to resources.
An invitation to reflection
The young participants, with their creativity and commitment, have shown that even waste materials can turn into works of art of great value, capable of communicating a powerful message of ecological rebirth. The ability to see the potential hidden in what others consider useless is a message that transcends the artistic area.
In fact, it stimulates a reflection on our environmental impact and on the solutions that we can adopt to face future challenges.
This initiative also had the merit of sensitizing the Brescia community on the theme of environmental sustainability, showing that even in traditional contexts such as that of art it is possible to integrate green values that can make a difference. Art, in fact, is no longer only an aesthetic expression, but becomes a powerful tool for communicating urgent social and environmental values.
