Tajo-Segura transfer: a change in level is expected in February

At the January 25 meeting of the Commission of the Tajo-Segura Transferthe situation was analyzed based on the data existing on January 1 and level 3 was confirmed for this month of January, although the forecasts indicate that the system It will be at level 2 during the months of March and April. At the meeting it was suggested that the rains recorded in recent weeks could improve this forecast.

In these circumstances, the Commission agreed that at most one transfer could be authorized on a discretionary but reasoned basis of up to 20 cubic hectometers (hm3) for this month of January.

Regarding the availability of resources transferred in the Segura basin, as of January 1, it is recorded an existing volume of 15 hm³ for supplies, as well as a deficit of 14.7 hm³ for irrigation. On the other hand, it must be considered that there is a headwater volume of 47 hm³ pending shipment to this basin that will be transferred in a coordinated manner with the maintenance work of the aqueduct.

On the other hand, the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation presented a request for 1.33 hm³ for supplies through the Manchega Pipeline and reported on the state of flooding in the Tablas de Daimiel National Park.

Consequently, in application of the principles of prevention and precaution that must govern the action of the Public Administrations, considering the reserves of volumes of transferred water available in the Segura basin, the authorized volume pending transfer, the forecast of contributions for the coming months, the estimated future consumption of supply and irrigation and the application of the rule for the next six months, it was authorized a transfer from the Entrepeñas-Buendía reservoirs through the Tajo-Segura aqueduct of 20 hm³ for the month of January 2024.
