LIFE KANTAURIBAI project: ecological improvement of the Natura 2000 river network in Bizkaia Bay

He project LIFE KANTAURIBAI It is run by the Government of Navarre, through its public limited company GAN-NIK. Its purpose is the restoration of the river masses that flow into the Bay of Bizkaia to improve the conservation status of species and habitats. It has a budget of 10.8 million euros and is expected to be ready in 2027.

The initiative is promoted by a consortium of twelve agents, most of which are public entities such as the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, the Basque Water Agency (URA), the Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation or the municipal councils of Donostia, Errenteria and Hernani, among others. , who participate in various actions such as improving the conservation of migratory species (salmon, eel, shad, lamprey) and other native species. Iberdrola is the only private energy company leading this initiative to protect biodiversity.

The Basque company participates in the project by collaborating in the improving the river connectivity of the Urumea Riveron the border between Navarra and the Basque Country, with the construction of a new fish ladder in the Santiago Urumea weir, linked to the hydroelectric power station of the same name, which will additionally be equipped with a new visualization and video counting system that will allow the correct functioning of the infrastructure as well as the behavior of the salmonids that are so representative of the area.

In this year 2024, the construction project of the scale will be defined, together with that of the video counting system, which will be carried out in the following years of the year. project LIFE and then be able to monitor the results of its implementation.
