World Wetlands Day 2024: Green Alliance calls for a shock plan to achieve their restoration

On the occasion of World Wetlands Day 2024,Alianza Verde calls for a shock plan to recover and restore wetlands in our country. The political group has asked the Government for urgent measures in response to the critical situation in the wetlands of our country.

World Wetlands Day 2024: poor management and drought

From the green party, which echo the claims of environmental organizations, they are very concerned, especially given the serious drought situation in which we are immersed.

Spain has lost more than 60% of its wetlands in the last century; Less than a third are well preserved, the rest are at risk of disappearing, as Greenpeace warns on the occasion of the World Wetlands Day.

The drought further aggravates the agonizing situation of wetlands, which currently have less water, while demands increase and they remain dry, losing their biodiversity and associated ecosystems. In addition, they remember the importance of wetlands for biodiversity, hydrological balance, climate change mitigation and even the human water supply itself.

World Wetlands Day 2024: Doñana is dying

Specifically, today, in the World Wetlands Day 2024have wanted to remember from Alianza Verde the situation of Doñanasince, as they point out, months ago they presented a bill from Podemos-Alianza Verde to provide legal personality to the National Park.

The proposal promoted by both groups would mean a permanent shield for Doñana and would not depend on the political ups and downs of the different administrations involved, among which is the Junta de Andalucía, which recently presented a law to regularize illegal irrigation that would mean drying definitive of the aquifers of the area, although now withdrawn due to an agreement with the Ministry of Ecological Transition (MITECO).

“We want a shock plan and drastic measures to restore and recover the wetlands of our country. The survival of many species and the conservation of nature depend on it. biodiversity, and, therefore, our own. We are not talking about dialogue tables for the future, but about acting now, we cannot wait any longer,” says Juantxo López de Uralde, coordinator of Alianza Verde, on the occasion of the World Wetlands Day 2024.
