The musician and environmental activist Charly Alberti, named Ambassador of the UN Environment Program

Charly Alberti, the famous and renowned musician and activist, creator of the environmental protection foundation, Revolución 21 (R21) – Sustainable Latin America has been appointed by UNEP as Regional Goodwill Ambassador.

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) today named the famous Argentine musician and environmental activist Charly Alberti as its first Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Latin America and the Caribbean. Through this appointment, announced on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, UNEP aims to mobilize the reputation of the rock star and his work on behalf of the environment to attract more attention (and action ) on the urgent need to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste in the region.

“I am honored and excited to collaborate with UNEP as a Goodwill Ambassador,” said Charly Alberti, adding: “The environmental changes taking place around the world are a challenge for humanity. I am convinced that art in all its forms has the power to mobilize the world and inspire much-needed change.

Through my Revolution21 foundation, I have been working in this same direction for many years. Now, thanks to this appointment, I will add my best efforts and my platform to support UNEP activities aimed at addressing the environmental challenges that we all face, particularly in our region of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Music and environment

Charly Alberti rose to stardom in the 1980s as a member of the most successful Argentine group in national history, Soda Stereo. He is the son of a jazz drummer and is also dedicated to environmental action. His foundation, Revolución 21 – Sustainable Latin America, works on issues related to environment in Argentina and the Latin American region. In turn, the rock band Soda Stereo has undertaken ecological actions such as planting 4,700 native trees to offset carbon footprint of his 2020 “Thanks Totales” tour, one of the first Latin American tours to undertake this type of initiative.

“We are pleased to welcome Charly Alberti to the UNEP family,” said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP. «His passion for environment and his ability to connect with people through music have made Charly Alberti an effective advocate for environmental action. We are confident that we will work with him to inspire action and promote solutions to environmental challenges in the regionn [de América Latina y el Caribe] and beyond,” he added.

Charly Alberti’s environmental contributions have already been awarded several times. First, by the Argentine National Parks Administration (APN), which granted him the recognition of honorary park ranger. Also by the Senate of the state of California (United States of America) for their efforts in the fight against climate change and promoting sustainability. And now by the United Nations, who appointed him Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) at the national level.

UNEP is considered the highest authority on environmental issues, leading collaboration in caring for the environment, providing leadership and encouraging, inspiring, informing and enabling people and nations to achieve significant improvement in their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
