ANSE celebrated World Migratory Bird Day with an open doorbell

The environmental organization ANS commemorated the World Migratory Bird Day 2024May 11, inventory of the campaign ring 2024 on the island of Glosa. And participate in the open door ringing, organized by Aranzadi, at the Archena River constant effort station, on the Segura River.

More than a thousand birds were ringed during the Marriage Campaign ring on Isla Grosa 2024, which took place continuously between March 15 and May 6. A total of 1001 individuals from 40 different species have been marked.

The majority correspond to migratory species that use the island of Grosa as a resting place during their migration. These birds have spent the winter in temperate regions of Africa and return to their breeding grounds throughout Europe in the spring. The campaign is made possible thanks to the work of a large group of volunteers.

The most commonly caught species, as usual in spring, is the musical chiffchaff (Phylloscope trochilus), a species that weighs only 9 grams and migrates thousands of kilometers every year. Also worth noting is the ringing of a Siberian chiffchaff (Phylloscope colybita sad) and a royal finch (Fringilla montifrilla), the latter the first record during spring migration.

ANSE: rings of a decreasing number of birds

The last campaign was characterized by an abnormally low number of catches, in line with what has happened in other similar projects in the Western Mediterranean. There are many factors that can influence the number of catches (population status, success of the previous breeding season, survival during wintering in Africa, weather conditions during migration… etc.), making it difficult to draw conclusions. Although it is true that this campaign, which is one of the weakest since we have had data, was already preceded by a new record of minimum catches during last autumn’s campaign.

After the campaign ends ring from Glosa Island, the Ringing group ANS continued its activities last Sunday, May 12, in celebration of World Migratory Bird Day, with a national initiative of the Aranzadi Ringing Agency, which has been in existence for 75 years, and organized an open day at ringing stations throughout Spain.

The group of ring took part and opened the doors of the constant effort station on the River Segura, in Archena, where fifty birds could be ringed last Sunday, in the company of volunteers and the media. This station has been active for 17 years, allowing us to study the trends of some species that are reducing or increasing their populations.

The group’s projects ring They have the corresponding administrative authorization granted by the General Directorate for Natural Heritage and Climate Action.
