Castilla-La Mancha ‘drives’ the custody of the territory for biodiversity conservation

The custody of a territory consists in the application of a set of strategies and techniques aimed at preserving the natural, cultural and landscape values ​​of the territory, as well as the verification that in the same responsible use is carried out and biodiversity is not affected.

A custody agreement is a voluntary procedure between an owner and an entity of custody for agree how to conserve and manage a territory in order for it to be safe from external actions. The pact can be verbal or written.

Custody entities are non -profit public or private organizations that actively participate in the conservation of the territory through the techniques of custody of the territory. Protecting territories and biodiversity

The regional government, through the Ministry of Sustainable Development, “will promote the Custody of the territory as a tool for conservation of biodiversity and citizen participation, paying attention to the social dimension of these initiatives and their potential contribution to the fight against depopulation. ”

This was highlighted by the general director of Natural Environment and Biodiversity, Susana Jara, during the Custody Day of the Territory held in the Ministry, where she has known firsthand the initiatives that are carried out by interested entities.

As explained, “the Custody of the territory is constituted as a tool for conservation of nature which encourages voluntary agreements between owners and non -profit entities for the improvement of the natural and cultural values ​​of an environment, and we want to use this management mechanism for the coordination and organization of the compensatory measures associated with the projects to implement renewable energy in the region ”.

The representative of the Autonomous Executive said that “an example of success of this collaboration model is found in the program of compensatory agronomic measures within the called ‘Beta knot’ in Cuenca, where a custody contract of the territory has been signed with the ‘Global Nature’ Foundation which has 1,570 hectares in agro -environmental measures.

This is done as compensation for Occupation of steppe habitats by 18 photovoltaic solar plants developed by six promoters in four municipal terms of the province (Barajas de Melo, Belinchón, Vieves and Zarza de Tajo). ”Jara concluded highlighting that“ the day has been very successful, since it has had a participation of 19 entities and 85 participants ”.
