Conservation work on a section of the Mero River, in Cambre (Galicia)

The Xunta de Galicia has given orders to carry out conservation work in a section of the Mero river, located in Cambre, thanks to which more than 10 kilometers of river current have been cleared of biomass and other elements that could hinder the flow.

The Department of Environment and Climate Change, through Augas de Galicia, today began carrying out conservation and maintenance in a river section about 10 kilometers from the Mero River, as it passes through the town hall of Cambre.

Cleaning the Mero River

The tasks, which will take place in several parishes of the municipality and which have already been communicated to the City Council, will consist of the removal of fallen trees and biomass to avoid blockages.

The work will last approximately two weeks and will will be carried out through the application of manual toolsthe use of chainsaws and roadheaders, and with the support of other larger machinery, such as a tractor and a truck.

Once the works scheduled by the agency dependent on the Galician Executive are completed, this river section will be cleared of weeds, thus making possible the fluid circulation of its waters.

Augas de Galicia develops these actions within the framework of the maintenance program, conservation and improvement of the public hydraulic domain of the Galicia-Costa basins and in the access and protection areas.

The ultimate goal of the work is to improve the river beds to promote the natural conditions of the river ecosystemacting in the areas in which the Xunta has powers, outside the urban river networks of municipal responsibility.

The cleaning tasks being carried out by Augas de Galicia not only deal with the removal of fallen trees, but also with all types of biomass that can cause blockages or prevent the free circulation of water.
