EDUCARBALE Project: educate, train and disseminate about the ‘Ancares Leoneses Biosphere Reserve

The Biosphere Reserve of the Leonese Anchors has begun the execution of Educarbale, an Educational, Training and Outreach Project that has been able to be carried out thanks to the NextGenerationEU funds for the execution of the recovery, transformation and resilience plan.

The EDUCARBALE project will be developed in the four municipalities that make up the RBALE (Peranzanes, Vega de Espinareda, Valle de Ancares and Villafranca del Bierzo) until May 2025, as a continuation and improvement of Edcucarbale between 2024-25.

To do this, it has funding of €39,100 that will be divided between the hiring of two people, the preparation of materials and management of presentationssince this project has 3 main differentiated actions:

  • School Education
  • Training Conferences and Seminars
  • Scientific dissemination: Braña Magazine.

The main activities that will be launched are informative workshops in the schools of the Reserveconferences and talks on 12 different topics in collaboration with the Scientific Committee and the printing of the first and second edition of the Braña Magazine in coordination with the Omaña and Luna Valleys Biosphere Reserve.

For this purpose, most of the budget has been allocated to hiring a cultural monitor and an administrative person who are already workingafter the public selection carried out. The first actions will take place at the end of January in the primary groups of the Vega de Espinareda and Villafranca del Bierzo schools.

Educarbale: conferences and seminars

Next, the conferences and seminars that will deal with the following topics are already being prepared:

  • Sustainable Tourism (Vega de Espinareda)
  • Entrepreneurship (Villafranca del Bierzo)
  • Beekeeping (Vega de Espinareda)
  • Arboriculture and gardening: ornamental and fruit pruning (Villafranca del Bierzo)
  • Forestry work: strategies for maintaining the natural environment (Peranzanes)
  • Chestnut growing, diseases (Villafranca del Bierzo)
  • Traditional architecture: settlement or habitat and traditional architecture (Ancares Valley)
  • Extensive Farming (Valle de Ancares)
  • New Technologies (Vega de Espinareda)
  • Municipal environmental management (place to be defined)
  • Climate change: climate change and its impact on the life and economy of the Fornela and Ancares mountains. (Peranzanes)

This work is part of the Line of Action for Training the inhabitants and staff of the Biosphere Reserve in matter of Biodiversity conservation according to the regulatory bases of the subsidy granted by the Junta de Castilla y León to finance actions in the Biosphere Reserves of Castilla y León, of the Order MAV/585/2022, of May 30, which approves the regulatory bases for the granting of subsidies in the biosphere reserves of Castilla y León, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

The RBALE 2022-26 Action Plan explicitly includes this project within Program 5.2. School education program, specifically in 5.2.1 EducaRBALE Project, development of educational activity around the RBALE in local schools and Program 5.4 Education Program scientific development with specific training proposed by the population and the RBALE Scientific Committee.
