Electoral debate for the Parliament of Catalonia on TV3 with politicians manifestly incompetent in the face of the drought

Greenpeace has deployed in the Sau swamp a banner with the message “The electoral debate at Parliament of Catalonia of TV3 should be here” next to the life-size figures of the candidates. He Sau reservoir is at 12.73% of its capacitya lack of water caused by climate change and an economic model that overexploits and contaminates the country’s water resources, led by politicians who are manifestly incompetent in the face of drought. For the environmental organization, Catalonia neither mitigates nor adapts, it dries up; y requires parties to commit to strong measures during the campaign for a rapid ecological transition with social justice.

The environmental organization has placed eight life-size figures of the candidates of the parties represented in the Parliament of Catalonia with the message “The electoral debate at Parliament of Catalonia of TV3 should be here”.

He Sau reservoir is today at 12.73% of its capacitywhich reflects the very serious environmental situation that Catalonia faces, caused and deepened by climate change, the poor management of the Administrations and water planning aimed at satisfying the needs of an economic model that for years has overexploited and contaminated the country’s water resources.

Through this action, the environmental organization wanted to draw the attention of the parties to ask them to put the climate emergency and the biodiversity crisis at the center of the debate and that it does not tiptoe, as is happening, over the climate emergency and its consequences.

In recent weeks, the environmental organization has presented its proposals in favor of the territory, people and social justice in Catalonia. Among them, it is worth highlighting:

  • Create one Vice Presidency of Ecosocial Transition and Climate Emergency, that acts as the driving and transversal axis of all public policies in matters of climate and biodiversity in Catalonia.
  • Energy: commitment to plan progressive abandonment of fossil fuels and decarbonizing the economy by 2040, reducing energy demand by half and establishing a 100% renewable energy systemorderly, democratic and that protects biodiversity.
  • Water: ending waste and mismanagement of water and aquifersputting the brakes on industrial livestock farming and agriculture, mass tourism and urban and industrial pollution, and establishing clear measures for the recovery and protection of groundwater.
  • Mobility: advance a model of sustainable mobility and just to decarbonize mobility in cities and structure the country with more and better public transportation.
  • Natural heritage: guarantee the protection and restoration of ecosystems through better planning and greater economic and human resources, as well as through the approval and implementation of the necessary legal and institutional tools.
  • Living towns: move towards a Catalonia with places, villages and towns with all servicesdefending food sovereignty, moving towards organic agriculture and livestock, proximity chains and the defense of artisanal and sustainable fishing.
  • Consumption: guarantee a ecological, local and sustainable public purchasingwhile establishing policies that promote reparability, reuse and exchange, leaving aside the current model based on incineration and landfilling of waste and advancing the circular economy.
  • Economy: get out of the framework of an economy of oligopolies, guaranteeing access to basic services for all, advancing in the green taxation and strengthening the economic fabric of the social, ecological and care economy.
  • Democracy: put in place effective mechanisms that allow more and better citizen participationpromoting participatory decision-making on matters of importance and transparency in public management.
