European Urban Initiative: the third call for innovative actions arrives

THE EUROPEAN URBAN INITIATIVE (EUI), A NEW EUROPEAN UNION INITIATIVE TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT, LAUNCHES THE THIRD CALL FOR INNOVATIVE ACTIONS OF THE EUI (EUI-IA), FOCUSING ON TWO CRUCIAL THEMES: THE ENERGY TRANSITION AND THE TECHNOLOGY IN CITIES

The European Urban Initiative (EUI) represents a crucial tool for to support cities of all sizes, improve skills and knowledge. Promotes innovation and develop innovative, transferable and scalable solutions to urban challenges at the level ofEuropean Union (EU).

One of the main objectives of the EUI, in particular through the Innovative Actions (EUI-IA), is to continue the support started with the Innovative Urban Actions. It provides urban authorities across Europe with the resources and space needed to identify and to experiment new innovative responses to complex local challenges related to sustainable urban development. Encourage the use of conventional cohesion policy programs in urban areas with proven innovations.

EUI-IA projects are selected through calls for tenders based on one or more themes proposed by the European Commission.

Call for EUI Innovative Actions (EUI-IA)

The third announcement ofEuropean Urban Initiative will be open from May 2024 until October 2024. With an indicative budget of 90 million euros coming from European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)each project will be able to receive up to 5 million euros of ERDF co-financing and must be completed within a maximum of 3 and a half years.

Tender topics

  • Energy transition: The European Urban Initiative aims to support the testing of innovative solutions for the creation of smarter, more integrated and economically sustainable local energy networks. These solutions should promote a reduction in carbon emissions and actively involve citizens and stakeholders to accelerate the process transition.
  • Technology in cities: The EUI intends to support the testing of innovative solutions based on new technologies, aimed at improve the services offered to citizens and to strengthen the capacity of local authorities to provide these services. Such trials should be designed to be replicated on a larger scale.

Timeline

The tender was launched in May 2024 expiring October 2024. Applications will be evaluated from October 2024 to March 2025. The announcement of the selected projects will take place in March 2025.
