The Fragas do Eume Natural Park is one of the best preserved Atlantic riverside forests in Europe. The park is shaped like a triangle whose vertices and borders are As Pontes, Monfero and Pontedeume and is made up of lush forests that follow the course of the Eume River.
It was also declared a Place of Community Importance and its fragas are considered one of the best examples of thermophilic Atlantic forest on the European continent. Only about 500 people live within the park.
A very important park
The Xunta de Galicia allocates nearly 62,000 euros in aid to the town councils of Cabanas and As Pontes to promote conservation projects and enhancement of the Fragas do Eume Natural Park. The territorial delegate of Ferrol, Martina Aneiros, reported on this aid destined for natural parks in Galicia during a visit to the deterrent parking lot built in the parish of Soaserra, in Cabanas, together with the mayor of the town, Fernando Couce.

The initiative had an investment of 32,810 euros from the Department of Environment and Climate Change and allowed the Complete renovation of the parking lot surface with adequate pavement and the reorganization of existing spaces for better space management. The action also included the installation of reinforced grass paving on the perimeter and plant ornamentation to improve and enhance the facility.
Martina Aneiros explained that, through this order also addressed to individuals, associations and companies, the Galician Government subsidizes initiatives aimed at the conservation and restoration of biodiversity, especially those aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change; to improving the ecological connectivity of fauna and flora; to the restoration of historical, heritage or cultural elements representative and necessary for the maintenance of its landscape and to the creation or improvement of infrastructure for the management of recreational uses.
He recalled that through this order nearly €1.4 million were granted and that, in the case of city councils, the amounts to be received were a maximum of €40,000 per project. In addition, he highlighted as the main novelty of the 2024 call the possibility of also subsidizing environmental awareness campaigns and information and awareness activities related to any of the six Galician natural parks.
