The Covenant of Mayors brings together thousands of local governments (as is the case of Mos), which have voluntarily adopted the commitment to implement the climate and energy objectives indicated by the EU. The launch of the Covenant of Mayors took place in Europe in 2008.
The purpose was to bring together local governments that voluntarily committed to achieving and exceeding the EU’s energy and climate targets. This initiative not only introduced an innovative approach to actions that relate to the central themes of the Pactbut its success immediately exceeded all expectations.
Mos and the Covenant of Mayors
The Xunta recently highlighted the environmental commitment of the Mos City Council with the development of the Action plan for climate and sustainable energy (PACES), which is part of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy.
During a visit today to this Pontevedra municipality, the general director of Renewable Energy and Climate Change, Paula Uría, indicated that 92% of the municipalities adhering to the Pact of Mayors for Climate and Energy have already prepared the corresponding PACES, which is a fundamental roadmap to improve energy efficiency, use renewable energy sources, increase resilience and reduce CO2 emissions.
Along these lines, Paula Uría gave as an example the actions included in the PACES prepared by the Mos City Council, and that have already been implemented, such as, among others, the replacement of old equipment for more efficient ones to reduce consumption and renovation. of public lighting installations as well as the municipal fleet of vehicles with the acquisition in recent years of five hybrid vehicles with ECO label.

On this occasion, the general director, accompanied by the mayor of the town, Clara Arévalo, visited the Sano Rafael urbanization, where the pavement was renewed with the use of polished cement with the aim of reducing noise pollution as well as with the use of light color in it to stop heat absorption. As adults, Paula Uría and Clara Arévalo traveled a section of the bike path that runs through the parishes of Torroso, Mos and Guizán, which allows the neighborhood to move efficiently and sustainably.
Furthermore, in line with continuing the work carried out in recent years by the Galician Government by promoting initiatives that contribute to turning the Community into an authentic green and sustainable climate refuge, last year the Xunta presented the Local Climate Network, which aims to coordinate with the town councils the actions to take advantage of synergies in the fight against global warming and, at the same time, promote local environmental sustainability policies, facilitating knowledge management as well as the dissemination and exchange of experiences.
