Geological risk and climate change: Anci agreement – Siga

The protocol signed by Anci – Siga aims to spread awareness and information on geological risks and on the strategies for adaptation to climate change. Through dissemination and awareness activities, aimed at local administrators, municipal technicians, civil protection volunteers and citizens, aims to strengthen the prevention and protection of the territory

We live in an era in which i climate change and the hydrogeological instability They represent increasingly pressing challenges for the safety of our territory. The intensification of extreme events and geological instability require not only timely interventions but, above all, an approach based on knowledge and prevention.

In this context, the memorandum of understanding signed between theANCI, National Association of Italian Municipalities and the Siga, Italian society of environmental geologyis configured as an essential tool for spreading awareness and promoting effective adaptation strategies.

Understand and face geological risks

The initiative was born with the aim of providing local administrators, municipal technicians, volunteers of the Civil Protection And citizens the tools necessary to understand and face geological risks. Through free information seminars, we intend to overcome the emergency approach that too often characterizes the management of calamities, instead promoting a culture of prevention based on scientific knowledge and sharing of good practices.

Plan strategies for adaptation to climate change

Anci, aware of the crucial role that the Municipalities play in the management of the territory, reiterates their commitment to support local administrations in the delicate task of planning strategies for adaptation to climate change.

“Subscription of this memorandum of understanding – it is written in the ANCI note – testifies to the commitment of the Association in supporting Italian municipalities in the path of knowledge and management of geological risk and strategies for adaptation to climate change. Through targeted dissemination initiatives, we intend to encourage greater awareness and preparation of local administrators on fundamental issues for the safety and protection of the territory “.

Overcome the emergency approach as much as possible

At the same time, Siga underlines the need to strengthen awareness of natural dangers, so that the perception of risk becomes a cardinal element in urban development policies and in the protection of the environment.

“The effort we want to make together with the ANCI – reiterate geologists – It is to strengthen awareness to mitigate the effects that natural dangers have on ourselves and on our future. The goal is to overcome as much as possible the emergency approach to the problem of instability and act with knowledge -based prevention measures. Our country is very exposed to the effects of natural dangers and extreme events. On damage it greatly affects the lack of perception of exposure to natural dangers in the territories we live and frequent. Today with the ongoing climatic crisis it becomes increasingly important to inform, sensitize and in some cases transfer the technical-scientific knowledge to the municipal technicians, to the administrators, to the decision makers “.

Ensure safer and resilient communities

In a country like Italy, strongly exposed to extreme geological and climatic phenomena, scientific dissemination and training represent essential tools to guarantee safer and resilient communities. This protocol marks a significant step towards a future in which knowledge becomes the main ally in the defense of our territory.
