Has successfully one Project that was carried out on the island of Gran Canaria and was promoted by the local city council in collaboration with a famous NGO protection of birds and other entities.
The project called: Implementation of recovery and nature conservation actions of the coast-protected natural spaces of Gran Canaria It is aimed at promoting the preservation and distribution of the Avifauna that is present in the various protected natural spaces that the island has
Thanks to the The initiative in the mentioned is Censor for more than 2,200 birds of 33 different speciesEmphasizing the presence on the Canary coasts for its abundance: the great Chorlitejo, the Tridactyl Correlimos and the return.
Bird protection in Gran Canaria
The coast To the southeast of Gran Canaria is an area of great ecological and landscape value, characterized by a variety of unique and valuable habitats at regional and world level. These environments include halophytic areas, steppe, saladars and coastal lagunes, each adapted with their own characteristics and species, and are essential for the preservation of the biodiversity of the island.
These ecosystems not only accommodate endemic and endangered species, but alsoE also offer important ecosystem services, such as water and thermal regulations, aquifer charging or limiting climate change.
Emblematic spaces such as the locations of scientific importance of Jinamar, Juncalillo del Sur and Tufia, together with the special natural reserve of the Duna’s of Maspalomas, They are integrated in the Natura 2000 network and the Canary network of protected natural spaces thanks to the high biodiversity.
However, these fragile environments are confronted with serious threats: erosion, urbanization, invasive species, pollution and presence of waste that increases the predation of nests and bird chicks. Moreover, the lack of knowledge about its importance worsens out the effects of poorly planned human actions, especially in critical periods such as nesting.
In this context it has been developed The project “Implementation of recovery and nature conservation campaigns of the Coast-Protected Natural Spaces of Gran CanariaTo promote a better state of preserving these natural spaces for the nesting and migrating Avifauna of Gran Canaria, and as a representative sample of the few aquatic and steppe environments of the Canary Islands.
Excellent results
After six months of work, the project culminates with important achievements in both the field of scientific and in the field of education:
- 2,221 censored birds belonging to 33 different types
- 6 Field outputs In the most important projects of the project: RNE Van Maspalomas and Zepa/SIC Juncalillo del Sur
- 11 Informative meetings In cultural and neighborhood schools.
He Number of specimens and species during the period is relatively homogeneousemphasize as more abundant types of tridactyl correlations with 613 contacts (27.60%), followed by the return and the large jet with 366 contacts each (16.48%).
Is Three species a total of 60% of the censored birds during the project. Other species that presented considerable numbers are the common Garceta, the Zarapito Trinoro and the Royal Heron with 193, 172 and 91 observations respectively.
These promotions, performed in the SIC/ ZEPA Juncalillo del Sur and the RNE of Maspalomas in his informative line, And in 13 coastal locations in the order and study of Avifauna, they have clearly patent the growing interest of citizens, which requires more educational actions, greater legal protection of these spaces and the increase in conservation actions.
The success of the project shows that citizen participation and coordinated work between administrations and environmental organizations are essential to retain natural heritage. This joint dedication represents a Solid basis to continue in the defense of the natural spaces of Gran Canaria and to guarantee their conservation for future generations.
