Greenspaces revolutionizes the management of urban greenery in Rome – Il Giornale dell’Ambiente

ROME IS PREPARING TO ENTER A NEW ERA OF MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF ITS VAST GREEN HERITAGE THANKS TO THE INNOVATIVE DIGITAL PLATFORM “GREENSPACES”. THIS TECHNOLOGY PROMISES TO REVOLUTIONIZE THE CARE OF THE CAPITAL’S GREEN SPACES, MAKING IT MORE EFFICIENT AND TRANSPARENT

The presentation of the Greenspaces digital platform

The new digital platform was recently introduced in Rome Greenspaces, which promises to significantly improve the management of urban greenery through the use of digital and satellite technologies. The official presentation, which took place on 28 July 2024, saw the participation of the mayor Roberto Gualtieriof the councilor for Agriculture, Environment and Waste Cycle Sabrina Alfonsi and the president of Municipality XIV Marco Della Porta.

But let’s try to understand what this innovation consists of.

We know Greenspaces

Developed by the R3GIS company, specialized in GIS (Geographical Information Systems) solutions and software for land and environmental management, Greenspaces will allow the municipal administration to effectively and integrated manage all the phases concerning the care of green spaces, from detection and inspection to detailed documentation of interventions.

Using data from satellite remote sensing carried out by the company specializing in geospatial services E-Geos, part of the group Telespaziothe platform is able to create a detailed map that includes precise information on every single tree, play area, fitness area and dog area.

The system constantly monitors the health of trees and other urban green elements.

Sensors and satellite images evaluate growing conditions and detect any problems such as disease or environmental stress.

Finally, the information collected and immediately uploaded to the platform guarantees continuous updating of the database.

This is why the Roman Administration can precisely plan the necessary actions, such as pruning, phytosanitary treatments or repairs of street furniture elements.

It is useful to point out that, with a view to transparency, maintenance interventions are recorded in all their phases, from planning to execution. This includes reporting the times and methods of execution.

Monitoring of play and fitness areas

As mentioned, Greenspaces is not limited to tree management but also includes the monitoring and maintenance of play and fitness areas, ensuring that equipment is always in good condition and safe for public use. The platform also keeps track of dog areas to ensure they are properly cared for and maintained.

Participatory citizenship

The system also promotes greater transparency and participation on the part of citizens, who can be informed in real time about maintenance interventions. These can also report problems or suggest interventions, in order to make the management of urban greenery a collaborative process.

Greenspaces, collaborations and support

In collaboration with theHigher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), Greenspaces also allows georeferencing and monitoring of the network of wells and public irrigation systems. This allows for more efficient management of water resources used to maintain green spaces.

Pilot project

The project started with a pilot phase in Town Hall XIV (Central-North), with the aim of extending the implementation to all municipalities of Rome by the end of the year.

«This extraordinary tool, with thewith the help of technologies and satellites, helps us map all the green spaces in Rome, to know, monitor, predict and plan all the actions necessary for the protection and maintenance of trees, play areas and fitness areas – explains Mayor Gualtieri – Rome is the greenest municipality dEurope and its environmental care, necessary but complex, also involves the active involvement of citizens, a collaboration that will help us increase the usability of this enormous common heritage.”

Training and collaborations

«With theactivation of Greenspaces, lAdministration is equipped, thanks to satellite technology, with an advanced management toolimmense green heritage of the city with lobjective of improving itel. effectivenessefficiency”, adds councilor Alfonsi.

«Per lUsing the platform, specific training courses were held which involved the technical staff of the Capitoline Environmental Protection Department and that of the Municipalities. We are particularly pleased to make operational, after very complex preparatory work, a control and planning system of fundamental importance also for its repercussions on the environmental benefits of better green management and on the transparency of all the interventions that such management entails” .
