H2INTEGRAL: alliance of Basque companies to develop the green hydrogen. H2INTEGRAa project developed by PETRONOR as coordinator and 11 other leading companies in the value chain green hydrogenwhose purpose is the research into physical and digital solutions for creating an ecosystem of the green hydrogen that connects and optimally manages generation, distribution and final use.
He green hydrogen has been identified by European and international bodies as an essential element for the energy transition to a neutral economy in terms of greenhouse gas emissionsthus a horizon of development of a European and global market of the green hydrogenassociated with its function as a catalyst for the integration of renewable electrical technologies in the energy system. This development will bring opportunities throughout the value chain green hydrogenboth in production and in integration with renewable generation installations, storage, transportation, and distribution and consumption. It is therefore necessary to adopt a strategic positioning that puts the Basque Country and its industrial structure in the best position to take advantage of the opportunities in energy, environment and industrial and technological development.
The project is created in this context H2INTEGRALwhich takes as its starting point the production infrastructure of green hydrogen of PETRONOR and whose main objective is to research various technological solutions for physical and digital implementation to make progress in creating an ecosystem of green hydrogen that optimally connects and manages the end use of hydrogen with the production infrastructure.
H2INTEGRA research is carried out within the framework of a unique infrastructure
- A 2.5 MW electrolyzer at the Petronor refinery, a pipeline connecting the green hydrogen generated to the Abanto Technology Park to provide a data center as backup power in the park.
- A compression and storage station with several MEGC (Multiple Element Gas Container) loading bays for trucks and a hydro line for charging light and heavy vehicles.
- The MEGC trucks will deliver the hydrogen to a satellite hydropower station at Bilbao Airport, for charging vehicles on land and for handling equipment in the air area, and to the port of Bilbao, where they will serve to supply the operation of cranes. of merchandise,
- For the usage scenarios of green hydrogen In Bizkaia, for the production of steel pipes and aluminum containers, there will be prototypes for in situ generation green hydrogen.
- Finally, for cases where it enters the natural gas network via injection, it is necessary to separate the supply green hydrogenthat is transported mixed.
- All this infrastructure will be supplemented with security elements
- and will be connected to a digital platform that collects demand data to inform the production, compression, storage, logistics and distribution of the green hydrogen.
By using this infrastructure, the consortium of H2INTEGRAL will develop a platform for matching production and demand green hydrogenfor the management and optimization of the production and distribution of green hydrogen.
In addition, solutions will be developed for monitoring and predicting storage, compression, distribution and usage processes, use in industries with intensive heat use or decarbonization of data centers; and new hydrogen fuel cell systems for harbor cranes, solutions for the separation of green hydrogen transported together with natural gas, and new instruments, strategies and systems for the safety and integrity of infrastructures.
All this will represent an opportunity for the decarbonization of Basque industry and other sectors that are difficult to reduce, and at the same time for industrial development to position themselves as technology exporters.
H2INTEGRAL is a multi-year strategic industrial research collaboration project (2023-2025) in which the following entities participate: Petronor (coordinator), Envases Metalúrgicos de Álava, PQC Power Quality Control, TEAM Engineering and Consulting, Tubos Reunidos Group, IBIL, CSP Iberian Bilbao Terminal, Sarralle Engineering , H2SITE, Nortegas, ALBA Emission Free Energy and FERRO Maquinaria De Elevación. In addition, it has the support of Tecnalia and Petronor Innovación as agents of the Basque Network of Science, Technology and Innovation (RVCTI), as well as the Energy Cluster for communication and dissemination activities.
H2INTEGRAL It is subsidized by the Ministry of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Basque Government (HAZITEK 2023 programme) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
