The Italian Committee for Unicef and Iaia Italia have organized the international edition of Hackathon for the 2025 climate. Young people from Romania, Czech Republic, Tunisia, Ukraine and Italy involved. Objective to promote the active participation of boys and girls in decisions on climate change, favoring dialogue with institutions and the development of innovative solutions
Hackathon: an international event for youth participation
On 26 and 27 March 2025, at the headquarters of the Italian Committee for theUNICEFyoung people from five nations have compared themselves on the themes of environmental sustainability and climate change. The event, created with the collaboration of To Italy (International Association for Impact Assessment), wants to give voice to the new generations and make them protagonists in the definition of effective climatic strategies.
The climatic crisis and the rights of children
«The climatic crisis is increasingly a crisis of the rights of children and adolescents. For this reason we decided to make this hackathon, connecting young people from different nations to encourage listening and active participation. Only in this way can they contribute concretely to climatic policies“Said Paolo Rozera, general manager of UNICEF Italy.
Innovation and artificial intelligence at the service of the environment
«We are very satisfied with the results achieved in collaboration with Unicef and Italian institutions. Young people, supported by teachers, local administrators and professionals, will have the opportunity to co-process concrete actions for environmental improvement “, Giuseppe Magro, president of Iaia Italia said.
The president made it known that during the event, the participants used analytical artificial intelligence tools to develop projects to improve sustainability in their territories.
These projects were presented in the context of the monitoring of the strategic environmental assessments (VAS) of their municipalities and will be illustrated at the 44th IAIA25 world conference “Impact Assessment in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”, scheduled in Bologna from 1 to 4 May 2025, in front of 1,200 delegates from one hundred nations.

Hackathon for the climate: the young protagonists of the green solutions
Since 2019, the Italian Committee for Unicef and Iaia Italia have promoted hackathon for the climate, aimed at young people between 14 and 30 years old, with the aim of developing green skills, stimulating dialogue with political decision -makers and promoting active participation in environmental choices.
During the two days of work, the participants will explore the environmental challenges of their territories and design innovative solutions, with the scientific support of IAIA experts and the tutors of the Movement of young Volunteers of UNICEF (YouNicef). The event will make use of the Q-Cumber 5.0 platform, an advanced tool for the measurement and evaluation of the environmental impacts.
