Intacture: the first European data center in an active mine

IN THE HEART OF VAL DI NON40 KM NORTH OF TRENTO, A UNIQUE PROJECT IN EUROPE IS TAKING SHAPE: INACTURE. THE FIRST DATA CENTER LOCATED IN AN ACTIVE DOLOMITE MINE, AN Impermeable ROCK. WITH AN INVESTMENT OF MORE THAN 50 MILLION EURO, THIS INFRASTRUCTURE REPRESENTS A NEW GOAL FOR GREEN TECHNOLOGY, WHERE DIGITAL INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY COMBINE

A data center in the heart of the Trentino Mountains

IntactureThe Natural Home of Data is a new European project. It concerns the construction of one data center in an active dolomite mine, located in Val di Nonin Trentino. It’s the first center of this type in Europe. One of the few found in an underground quarry in Tassullo.

Since more than 80% of the surface of the structure reaches up to 100 meters deep, this will ensure electromagnetic safety and structural stability, as well as reducing the impact on the environment. Only the remaining 20% of the configuration constitutes the surface portion.

A strategic position in favor of sustainability and energy savings

The underground location of the data center makes this possible minimize land use and promotes a model of circularity of resources. The whole, using the existing spaces of the mine.

In fact, the data center will occupy one of the tunnels dug to obtain the dolomite rock. Due to its qualities, this is used in industrial or ecological environments for water treatment, thanks to its ability to neutralize acids and absorb pollutants.

By avoiding surface construction, we can reduce the impact equivalent to building more than 21 Olympic swimming pools by using only the space equivalent to one swimming pool.

The site location is located at 600 meters above sea level immediately constant temperature of 12 degrees. A position that will contribute to a significant reduction in energy consumption for the server cooling. Intacture stands out for its energy efficiency with a PUE (the indicator used to measure the energy efficiency of a data center) of less than 1.25, compared to the European average of 1.6 and for the exclusive use of energy from renewable sources, guaranteeing Intacture a reduced impact on the environment.

Intacture: an investment of more than 50 million euros

This project aims to become a real innovation hub. It was born after an investment, which amounts to 50.2 million euros18.4 million supported by the PNRR and 31.8 million by private funds.

The collaboration with theUniversity of Trento and other local partners want to create a favorable environment for research and development in the sectors. Among these, the healthcare, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and the energy transition.

Intacture can also be arranged events and projects for students and the community. The goal remains to become a modern agora, which can promote mutual connection people e innovation.

A technological and ecological challenge

The project was developed by Trentino DataMinea public-private consortium to which the University of Trento also belongs, Covi Costruzioni, Deda group, GPI group and ISA – Atesino Development Institutewith the planning contribution of On location, integrated engineering firm. The structure will be: a Edge data centeradapting to local needs and promoting a data center economics Italian.

Trentino DataMine: green digital innovation for a sustainable future

«With this project we now become a European reference point in research and development, contributing to the creation of one of the few green digital innovation hubs in the world», said the rector of the University of Trento, Flavio Deflorian.

The rector wanted to underline that at the basis of all their work is always a future-oriented philosophy, with young people and new generations at the center of the change. «I believe that sustainable innovation is one of the keys to building a better future, and what we will create and manage together in the public-private partnership is aimed at creating solutions that have a positive impact on the environment and society , today and for the future. future», concludes Deflorian.

On the other hand, the representatives of the private Trentino DataMine team also underlined that this was the case took up the challenge with enthusiasm of this very innovative project. «Data is the raw material of our future. We will help companies and organizations store and manage them safely and efficiently, within an ecosystem designed to generate multiple benefits, through co-location services for public and private companies, synergies with the world of research and development of solutions for the territory, the environment and the community. Intacture, the Trentino DataMine project, shows that the future of technology can be built in harmony with the environment, not only without compromising performance, but even improving it».

Intacture: an infrastructure that looks ahead

Intacture represents a strategic project not only for Trentino. This data center will help theItaly a technological hub competitive and advanced. She will do this by using the decentralization of infrastructure as a tool for more robust digital sovereignty and promoting data security.

According to theData Center Observatory of the Polytechnic University of Milanthe decentralization of data centers and the construction of local facilities is a growing trend in Europe. The goal is to help reduce latency and the retention of data within national borders. Intacture fits into this scenario and contributes to Italy becoming a relevant player in this growing sector.
