Life Ecorest: The Sailboat Blue Panda Surca the Waters of the Costa Brava who wants to protect Marine Ecosystems

The Life Ecoreset project Combine science, fishing participation and consciousness to protect the Mediterranean and to combat climate change.

This Initiative, coordinated by the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) until 2026Has partners with the territorial federation of Confraries of Pescadores de Girona, the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Ecological transition and the demographic challenge, the University of Barcelona and WWF Spain, as well as with the financial contribution of the European Union’s life program.

One of the activities of this project is precisely that of the Blauwe Panda sailboat Objective The study for the preservation of sharks and stripes in the Spanish Mediterranean Sea By obtaining and analyzing Environment -DNA in the water, the monitoring of marked samples and the collaboration with fishermen and researchers.

A research trip within the framework of Life Ecoreset

The Blue Panda -sailboat arrives in the Costa Brava in a new edition of this campaign that prevents the Mediterranean Sea Promote the preservation of marine ecosystems and populations that inhabit. In Spain, this new expedition will navigate from April 30 to May 6 and will travel Costa Brava to contribute to research and the importance of repairing deep seabed within the framework of the project Life Ecorest.

Blue Panda went on Blanes and will continue his journey by Roses (Friday 2 to Sunday 4) and Port of the Jungle (Monday 5 and Tuesday 6). At the first stop he received the visit from the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Kadis Coasts, to learn about the Life Ecorest project and met experts from the ICM-CSIC, with fishermen from the Blanes and technicians of the NGOs.

The project Life Ecorest is a pioneer initiative that aims to restore around 30,000 hectares of deep marine habitats In an area with a high ecological value along the coast of Girona and Barcelona.

Various activities will be carried out in every stop of the Blue Panda intersection: formations and training for fishermen, informative days for the public, so that they know the importance of repairing the seabed and activities with school children who have the opportunity to start the sailboat. The campaign will have participation in volunteers who They will help make the need to protect our seas.

There Life Ecorst Project Fishers, environmental activists and scientists work together To set up fishing -exclusion areas and to implement innovative techniques for the recovery of the deep -Waterse marine ecosystems that are affected by human activities. In the networks of the fishermen, corals, gorgonias and sponges are accidentally entangled. These organisms are more important than they seem, they are ‘architects of the seabed’ and offer refuge and food to a multitude of species.

The project, with this joint work and at the hand of the fishermen, manages to return these organisms to the sea, which contributes to its recovery. So far, The Life Ecoreset project has returned to the sea more than 3000 Gorgonias, corals and sponges thanks to the fishermen cooperation.

Beside the Research and preservation campaigns, the participatory management of fishermen are also promoted They are part of the project, the strengthening of administrative mechanisms and awareness for the population on the importance of preserving deep marine habitats.
