Miteco gives the OK to the dismantling of Puerto Mayor and the environmental recovery of La Caleta del Estacio (San Javier, Murcia)

The General Directorate of Quality and Environmental Evaluation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has formulated the Environmental Impact Declaration (DIA) to the dismantling project of the Puerto Mayor facilities and the environmental recovery of La Caleta del Estacio (San Javier, Murcia) that will be executed by the General Directorate of the Coast and the Sea of ​​the Ministry.

The long and complex administrative and judicial history to avoid the execution and environmental incidence of this project – which was intended At the proposal of Miteco, the Council of Ministers agreed to reversal to the state maritime-terrestrial public domain of the spaces corresponding to Puerto Mayor.

The General Directorate of the Coast and the Sea in 2022 made the tender for the drafting of the project for the subsidiary execution of the Withdrawal of facilities of Puerto Mayor and Dunar Restoration in the Manga del Mar Menor. This project, which was adapted to the allegations received in a first process of public information on March 12, 2024, underwent public information together with the Environmental Impact Study, initiating the preceptive Ordinary Environmental Impact Assessment.

How will the Maritime Front recover?

The dismantling project chosen by the MITECO contemplate the following actions:

  • Withdrawal of more than 2,500 meters of tables In the sea and on land, as well as different elements present in the maritime-terrestrial public domain (DPMT), such as advertising posters, fences or rubble.
  • Filling of fillings located in the transdós of the tablastacas (98,302.87 cubic meters –M3– of gravels, bowling of various sizes and sand) and soil contaminated with heavy metals in three identified areas (44,716.37 m3), which must be managed by authorized waste manager.
  • Arenas rearrangement obtained from the withdrawal of the fillings with the consequent configuration of the coastline in those areas.
  • Withdrawal from the indoor enclosure of the Levante dike (35.264,32 m3 of soil fillings formed by gravels, bowling of different size and sands, whose transport will be made by marine media), as well as the abandoned ships existing in the enclosure.
  • Dismantling of the last 200 meters from the southern breakwater.
  • Conditioning and reinforcement of the Espigón section that is maintained (supposes the withdrawal of 46,055.69 m3 of stone and rush present in the Espigón, the use of 8,884,68 tons of 120-240 kilos for the filter layer and the reuse of 11,446.51 m3 of selected size sized rush as a reinforcement mantle).
  • ESPIGÓN Conditioning located next to the access path to the southern breakwater (elimination of debris, relocation of existing escollera and reinforcement through the reuse of an escollera present in the field of the work).
  • Dunar Restoration of La Caleta del Estacio (according to the “Coast Dunas Restoration Manual” of the Miiteco): Conservation of protected species, elimination of invasive species, morphological reconstruction of the dunes, installation of sandplaces (wicker rods) and revegetation with indigenous species that have been consensual with the General Directorate of Natural Heritage and Climate Action of the Government of the Government of the Government of the Government of the Government of the Government of the Government of Murcia.
  • Installation of Wooden Gateways On some existing paths to allow access to the beach and pedestrian traffic, as well as a perimeter fence to separate the dunar environment from the urban and prevent access to dunes.
