During the months of October and November, energy company Moeve sadministered a SAF of 30% who already use all flights taking off from Melilla, operated by the Valencian airline, within the commitments made by both companies regarding the decarbonization of the aviation sector.
Moeve continues to promote it commitment to decarbonizing the aviation sectorwhich supplies sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Air Nostrum at Melilla Airport. The energy company will thus become the first company to offer this biofuel in the autonomous city, as it recently did at airports in the Canary Islands.
In concrete terms, Moeve has supplied 30% of the SAF to all flights departing from this airport, all operated by Air Nostrum. In this way, the flights that took off from Melilla airport in October and November loaded up to 15 times more tanks than the amount set in the European ‘ReFuelEU Aviation’ regulation for 2025 (at least 2%). Exolum, storage manager at Melilla Airport, has in turn provided the guarantee supply management, a logistics component essential to ensure that sustainable fuels reach the airlines.
This new milestone reinforces our commitment to decarbonizing the aviation sector, especially in areas difficult to access from the peninsula, such as Melilla, where air connections play a vital role. This boost is essential for the SAF to reach the various Spanish airports. As one of the main manufacturers and suppliers of this biofuel in Spain, we have already done so we deliver permanently to the main airports of the country.
Mª José Sanz Miguel, Director of Quality, Environment and Emergencies at Air Nostrum, for her part, emphasized: “At Air Nostrum, we are committed to supporting the SAF as a lever for the decarbonization of the aviation sector. So much so that our The target for 2030 is to consume 10% of this sustainable fuela percentage almost double that required by the European mandate of ‘ReFuelEU Aviation’.
And to continue making progress in developing this commitment, we chose Melilla implement this environmental initiativeas also a sign of our responsibility towards the people of Melilla. The aircraft that refueled at Melilla Airport in October and November carry 30% of fuel from certified sustainable sources, significantly reducing their carbon footprint thanks to the emissions savings made possible by the SAF.”
Moeve bets on the SAF
To guarantee the supply of SAF to its customers, Moeve, together with its partners, is developing the largest complex for the production of second generation biofuels in Southern Europe, with a production capacity of one million tons of SAF and renewable diesel. With this project, the company is furthering its objective of leading the production of 2G biofuels in Spain and Portugal, with an annual production capacity in 2030 of 2.5 million tons of biofuels, of which 800,000 tons will come from SAF, a enough to fly around the planet 2,000 times.
This initiative, developed by Moeve and Air Nostrum in Melilla, supports several of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda: SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy), SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth), SDG 12 (Responsible production and consumption) and SDG 13 (Climate action).
Air Nostrum is committed to this in its ecological transition plan SAF as a lever for decarbonizing the economycommitting to use 10% of the SAF by 2030, almost doubling the requirements of the European mandate. Together with the gradual increase in SAF consumption, fuel savings through ‘Big Data’ algorithms, artificial intelligence and machine learning improve business efficiency.
SAF is a second-generation biofuel produced by Moeve in its La Rábida Energy Park (Huelva) from used cooking oil and which, compared to traditional kerosene, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 emissions by up to 90% over the entire life cycle.
