Small, colorful and incredibly fascinating, these plants do not only represent a botanical treasure, but also embody a deep bond between the millennial history of the territory and its natural heritage.
A natural sanctuary of biodiversity
Over sixty species of spontaneous orchid, many of which are native, populate the promontory of Mattinata, transforming it into an authentic botanical garden in the open sky. Here, among the isolated meadows and the slopes of Monte Sacro, the plants find an ideal habitat for their survival, thanks to a favorable microclimate and an uncontaminated ecosystem. The presence of little altered soils and a moderate pasture contribute to the delicate balance that allows these floral wonders to thrive.
These orchids, although small in size, represent authentic masterpieces of nature. With an extraordinary variety of shapes and colors, they enrich the national and European botanical panorama. In Europe there are about 500 species of wild orchids, of which 284 in Italy. Puglia holds the primacy with 106 varieties, 93 of which they grow right in the Gargano, confirming the uniqueness of this territory.

From 24 to 27 April 2025, Mattinata will turn into the natural stage of the third edition of Orchidays – in the Flower of Mattinatathe first festival dedicated to the spontaneous orchids of Puglia. An unmissable event that offers visitors the opportunity to explore the territory accompanied by botanical experts, along paths immersed in native blooms. A unique experience that combines admiration, knowledge and environmental awareness.
The initiative is part of the tourist strategy of the municipal administration, which aims to promote morning beyond the traditional seaside tourism. The town wants to assert itself as a destination of excellence all year round, thanks to an increasingly oriented proposal to the decreased. No longer only a summer paradise, but an authentic first -rate cultural and naturalistic center.
