National waste collection of waste: Growth in 2024 – Il Giornale Dell’ambione

2024 marked a year of recovery in the WEEE collection (waste of electrical and electronic equipment) in Italy, with considerable progress in both terms of quantity and consciousness. The goal is now to consolidate these results, which further improves the collection and recycling to respect the objectives of the European Union

In 2024, collecting waste from electrical and electronic equipment in Italy meant an increase of 2.5% compared to the previous year, with nearly 360 thousand tons of WEEE for recycling. The annual report of the Wijee coordination center shows that this growth has brought the collection per head of the population per head of the population to 6.07 kg per inhabitant, which marks a positive trend at national level.

Detail of the results

In 2024, the consortium collective systems managed 358.138 tons of electronic waste, with an increase of about 9 thousand tons compared to 2023. For this data there are another 964 tons of voluntary collection by the individual consortia. This increase is largely attributed to the good performance of small devices and consumer electronics, which contrasted the decrease in the TV and monitor collection, the decrease in which the TV bonus is introduced in 2021.

Increase in collection per type of refusal

Kleine Wijee (consumption electronics, lighting and electronic devices) have seen a significant increase of 7.5%, with 82,471 tons launched to recycle.
Large devices (R2) registered an increase of 4%and reached 126,903 tons. Temperature exchange devices (R1) rose by 3.3% by 104,407 tons. TV and monitor (R3) saw a decrease of 10.9%, with 42,476 tons collected.

Collected by geographical area

2024 saw an increase in the collection in almost all Italian regions, with special evidence for:

  • Northern Eitaly: an increase of 4.1%, with Lombardy that the region remains collected with the larger volume (67,577 tons).
  • Central – -of -Italy: an increase of 1.8%, with Tuscany in the leadership with 8.30 kg per inhabitant.
  • South -Italy: Despite a slight increase in the collection per head of the population (+0.7%), the performance, with the Topsardinia with 9.67 kg per inhabitant, vary the lowest value with 3.02 kg per inhabitant.

Future objectives and perspectives

Despite the increase, Italy is still far from the collection objectives set by the European Union. The president of the Weee Coordination Center, however Giuliano MaddalenaUnderlines that the results show that the system has the resources and the possibility to keep improving.

He said: “Although still far from the collection objectives set by the European Union, this result is the confirmation, if there was ever need, that the system has all the papers in order and the resources to counteract physiological dynamics and to continue to improve its collection performance. The excellent results recorded by small WEEE Are in fact the demonstration of the effectiveness of the micro -cotton and communication activities that sees the manufacturers and indirectly their collective systems through the disbursement of economic contributions provid for in the program agreements.

The Weee -Coordination Center also plays an always central role in interviewing with distribution operators. Also thanks to the recent simplifications of the regulations with regard to the management of WEEE. This should accelerate the achievement of European objectives.
