L’Open Gate it is an event that the SOGIN, as the name of the event suggests, it organizes to literally open the doors of the nuclear power plant to citizens.

That of 2024 is the fourth edition. The intent is to show how we have been working for years now divestment of nuclear power plants in Italy.

Appointment, therefore, on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May, therefore next weekend. Accessions closed with a record five thousand requests. The expected participation is 3,354 people, with the addition of 1,744 registered on a specific mailing list who have asked to be informed about upcoming similar initiatives.

Open Gate, which sites you can visit

During the next Open Gate, it will be possible to visit the decommissioned nuclear power plants of Trino (VC), Caorso (PC), Latina and Garigliano (CE). And, for the first time, also the Itrec plant in Rotondella (MT).

The event takes place under the patronage of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security and will be an plastic free. In this way Sogin «confirms its commitment to contributing to the achievement of the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda», we read in a note.

Double visit route for citizens

Two visit routes: “controlled area” e “industrial area”. The power plants of Trino, Caorso, Garigliano and the Itrec plant in Rotondella will follow this standard; for Latina, however, only the route of “industrial area”.

These are tours aimed at making citizens understand how the event is taking place decommissioning, that is, the dismantling but the visits today also have a historical value. In fact, the systems can be included in the panorama ofindustrial archeology of our country.

«During the tours, Sogin technicians will take you through the places that represent a piece of our country’s industrial history and will talk about the work they carry out every day, in compliance with maximum safety criteria, to complete the dismantling of nuclear plants and manage radioactive waste, from their storage in temporary deposits to their definitive placement in the National Deposit».
