Gummosis is the liquefaction of parts of wood, especially those of young trees, causing the appearance of disease foci under the bark. These secrete a gummy fluid that varies in color from colorless to amber. This plant gum consisting of sugar and acids then seeps between pieces of bark on the branches and trunk.
To combat gummosis, fungicides should be applied to the trunk of the trees, because molds are the ones that cause the most damage and multiply in environments full of moisture.
We have to save the trees
The Minister of Agriculture, Water, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Barrachina, has stated that to protect our lands citrus crops after the devastating effects of the flood“We have invested 880,000 euros in the fungicide fosetyl-Al 80%, to prevent gummosis in 12 million citrus trees in the affected areas.”
Flooding can cause orange trees to suffer from gingivitis mold that is transmitted by waterlogging and excessive humidity and that weakens the tree, causing it to initially lose production and, in many cases, ending in its death within two or three years.
“The agricultural sector is crucial to our economy. For this reason, we from President Mazón’s government acted quickly provide farmers with the necessary tools to prevent this disease and guarantee the continuity of our trees and crops,” the councilor emphasized.
Miguel Barrachina made these statements during his visit to the Silla Plant Health Service, product distribution point. The minister emphasized that the phytosanitary product “is stored in Silla and at several strategic points in the most affected areas, including: Casinos, Pedralba, Bugarra, Llíria, Benaguasil, Cheste, Godelleta, Turís, Picassent, Carlet, L’ Alcúdia, Algemesí , Alzira, Castelló and Polinyà de Xúquer».
Furthermore, Barrachina has emphasized that “We have already received applications from 130 entitiesbetween professional agricultural organizations, cooperatives, SATs and municipal councils, covering an area of almost 30,000 hectares.”
Similarly, the Minister of Agriculture has emphasized that “we have paid attention to the needs of organic farmersdistributing 3,000 liters of copper oxychloride to treat approximately 1,000 hectares. A total of 255 organic producers have benefited from this distribution.
“We know that the organic farming has specific needs and from the ministry we want to ensure that all farmers receive the necessary support to meet the challenges of diseases and pests,” he reiterated.
Finally, Miguel Barrachina has emphasized that Valencian agriculture “is an essential pillar of our society, and from the Ministry we will continue promoting concrete measures to protect our crops and guarantee the sustainability of the sector. “This investment in plant health is another example of our commitment to our farmers and to the future of the Valencian countryside.”
