The impact of plastic at sea
The program includes a large part of the sea between the Gulf of Catania and the Strait of Messina, to the waters for Capo Vaticano. The theoretical lessons will mainly take place between Riposto (province of Catania) and Ganzirri (Messina).
One of the central themes of the project will be the impact of plastic at sea, with special attention to the interaction between microplastics and marine fauna, as well as the consequences for the trophic network.
Plastic is one of the most serious dangers of the environment for marine ecosystems. Millions of tons of plastic polluted seas and oceans. They are reduced over time in increasingly smaller excerpts to generate it so fairly microplastyie plastic particles lower than 5 mm to the micrometric level.
They can be taken by a wide range of marine organisms, consequently by those who feed on fish and therefore also by humans. They are so invasive that they accumulate in the organs and arrive to interfere with endocrine, digestion, reproductive, immune system.
The microplastics were also found in drinking water and this caused questions regarding the safety of public health and long -term effects.

The aim of the Summer School is to offer participants, university students, graduates and enthusiasts in marine biology, the opportunity to acquire practical field research skills in a scientifically relevant environment.
During the sea activities, members will be involved in activities such as:
- Monitoring on pre -set transepts;
- Data collection and biological samples;
- Use of scientific instruments for the observation and registration of marine species.
