The coalition of 300 civil society organizations demands that the EU:
- Promote coexistence: Strengthen preventive measures, such as the use of fences and sheepdogs, and make them more accessible to farmers.
- Imposing protection: ensure the eradication of illegal wolf hunting and enforce the EU Habitats Directive.
- increase awareness: Provide evidence-based education on the ecological and socio-economic benefits of wolves.
- Respect the science: Base any changes in wolf protections on rigorous data, not political pressure.
According to the media, a lot of political pressure has been exerted on Member States to accept the European Commission’s proposal: “There is no scientific basis and it is politically motivated,” say the organizations, who emphasize that This is a crucial moment for environment ministers.
“Wolves must remain strictly protectednot only for the well-being of the species and science, but also for the health of our ecosystems and the credibility of the European Union. If the EU wants to be a trusted ally of nature and a global leader, it must lead by example now.” Download manifesto in English.
