The Lake De Andara in Los Picos de Europa could resurface after having been emptied by mining companies

The one of Ándara was until the beginning of the last century the larger area of Cantabria. It had a length of 325 meters, a width of 75 meters and a maximum depth of 12 meters. The lake disappeared due to the opening of a crack caused by the explosions carried out in the near mines of Mazarrasa and Providencia, and was converted into a grassland area.

Las Mining companies always denied their responsibility and claimed natural causes. In 2011, two professors from the Department of Geology of the University of Oviedo, found the place where the filtration began and confirmed that this occurred because of the mining blasting.

The Lake De Andara is one of the only three “bags” of water that can receive that name in Picos de Europa. The other two are the Lake of Enol and La Ercina, in the western massif. There are other small rafts such as Lagunillas de las Moñetas, El Llagu Rasa, Los Lagos de Llorza, all in the central, or the Jou del Reseco, in the western one, but do not reach the category of lakes and many summers disappear.

Future recovery works of Lake de Andara

The PSOE is going to Ask for new jobs to try to recover Lake De Ándarawhich was in the Eastern Picos Massif of Europe and that disappeared in 1911 due to a blasting of the mining exploitation in the area, which caused a crack through which all the water was leaked. That lake had an area of 19,000 square meters and was one of the largest in Europe’s peaks until its disappearance.

Soon, the motion with which the PSOE in the Upper House will be analyzed It raises the recovery of that lake, located in the Cantabrian part of Picos de Europa. Its recovery was already analyzed by the University of Oviedo through a study that commissioned it, in 2017, the Ministry of Environment.

After that study, the Picos de Europa managers raised to recover the lake in 2018coinciding with the hundred years of the declaration of that protected space as a National Park, but a report by the Cantabrian Confederation of the Cantabrian cast that project down.

That report, which was announced in October 2018, indicated that the Recovery of the Lake of Ándara could not start because contamination problems could be generated in the aquifer of that space.

In that area, the Minas de Mazarrasa company was extracting zinc, at the time when The lake disappeared for one of his explosions to get mineraland for this he created a kind of town, of which only the ruins of several constructions remain, in which the miners lived.

The socialist senator for Cantabria and mayor of the municipality Lebaniego de Peñarrubia -procurement to the area of Andara -, Secondino Caso, raises in the proposal, which will defend before the Demographic and Depopulation Challenge Commission, that when the approved state budgets are, they are approved state budgets, «They may have projects for the conversion in the mountain shelter of the ruins of the ancient cassetones where the miners spent the night«.

Those Construcciones are on and around what was the largest lake in Cantabrialocated on the grounds of the Picos de Europa National Park that are located in the Cantabrian municipality of Cillorigo de Liebana. EFE / ECOticias.com
