The sea and environment alliance in Galicia is ‘strengthened’

A renewal of the Mar and Environment Alliance has been carried out, specifically linked to the scope of operational oceanographywhich is used as a coastal observatory of the Xunta de Galicia. It contributes to the sustainable management of marine resources and to achieve a high degree of resilience to climate change.

A new website was also made public that has been born from the fusion of the ancient intellmar and meteogalicia of automatic stations. Thanks to her, now there is a New database, which, being more modern and safe, allows a significant improvement in the data quality control process.

Environment and sea: 4 years more joint work

Ángeles Vázquez emphasizes that the work done in recent years has allowed the Xunta to optimize its coastal observatory, a tool that will be fundamental in the development and application of the Coast’s Integrated Planning and Management Law.

The Minister of the Sea, Alfonso Villares, and the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Ángeles Vázquez, have recently signed the agreement that allows extend for four more years the collaboration of both departments in the field of operational oceanography. This has been done at the headquarters of the Technological Institute for the control of the marine medium (Intecmar) at the Vilaxoán dock.

The In addition to the collaboration agreement, the commitment to support the information generated adds as a novelty by the Coastal Observatory of the Xunta de Galicia, thus complying with the provisions of Law 4/2023, of July 6, on integrated planning and management of the Galician coast.

In addition, it updates the technical services involved by both departments and that make up the Galician Ocean-Metorological Observation Network Composed of 6 automatic platforms, 4 Radar HF antennas, 43 oceanographic stations, deployed throughout the Galician coast for intertwining, and 160 meteorological stations that are managed by Meteogalicia.

The Minister of the Sea, Alfonso Villares, positioned the coastal observatory as a centerpiece for effective maritime management and sustainable development of the marine environment thanks to the disposition of a Wide list of products and services for the sectors of the AZU economyl and citizens in general.

Quality Predictions in Galicia

In this way, it allows to provide data and Quality and useful predictions for marine resources research and managementproviding necessary information for emergency management, supporting the Coast Guard, Sasemar already the execution of the Territorial Contingency Plan for Accidental Marine Pollution of Galicia (Camal Plan).

Along these lines, he stressed that in this way the Galician government reinforces its commitment to the 2030 Agenda by contributing to the efficiency in the management of extreme events, the resilience to climate change and the sustainable management of marine resources. The Sea head also highlighted the New automatic stations website that unifies the old ones, both of Meteogalicia and to intend, and that it nurtures a new safer and more modern database, improving the data quality control process.

For his part, Ángeles Vázquez stressed that Meteogalicia and Intecmar share information through the Coastal Observatory of the Xunta and coordinate for Promote observation and prediction models similar to those available in the meteorological field.

In fact, the work carried out during the last four years has allowed Improve the system and move from a weather prediction with a resolution of four kilometers just one kilometerwhat in practice means substantially improving wind forecast, waves, sea currents and sea temperature.

The optimization of the models, said the counselor, allows the Design and maintenance of different products and services such as specific predictions for ports or brotherhoodsbeaches, professional groups such as perclabes or even the Territorial Contingency Plan for Accidental Marine Pollution of Galicia (Camgal Plan).

The head of the Environment and Climate Change also stressed that this agreement and the improvement of the services offered by the Coastal Observatory of the Xunta de Galicia will contribute to the effective development and application of the Coast’s Integrated Planning and Management Law. In this sense, this collaboration will become a fundamental tool by allowing us to address different environmental issues linked to the management of the coast and the development of different activities in it.
