The Generalitat of Valencia is creating a new cartography of the areas flooded by DANA that devastated the city at the end of October. This will be done after updating the measurement of the depth of the river channels of Poyo, Magro and the Turia river.
The Generalitat will prepare a new mapping of flooded areas after updating the measurement of the draft or depth of the water flow of the Turia, Magro and Poyo. This was confirmed by the Minister of Environment, Infrastructure and Territory, Vicente Martínez Mus, during his visit to the Poyo ravine on his way through Riba-roja de Túria.
Cartography from DANA
This tool, implemented by the General Directorate of Urban Planning, Landscape and Environmental Assessment, adapts the ‘Risk Services’ application used by the fire service. Thus, it will allow delimiting the areas that have suffered floods and the height of the draft in each of them. In addition, with this application you can create cartographic maps of these flooded areas and clearly visualize the affected territory and the magnitude of the floods.
In short, it will be possible to obtain, in real time, the information collected by the technicians deployed to the area of the Turia, Magro and Poyo basins, which will be poured daily into Geographic Information Systems (GIS) programs, for later create a cartography adjusted to what happened in the floods.
Afterwards, the photographs taken in the field are georeferenced with GIS tools and linked to the information on the heights of the water sheets, for the subsequent generation of isolines that allow delimiting the flooding and the depths in the affected areas. Likewise, the modifications that have occurred in the channels of the rivers and ravines affected by floods.
This aspect will be very useful in the issuance of sectoral reports that, in terms of flood risk, will help in future decision making and will allow citizens to collect and process information efficiently and quickly. The idea is to be prepared so that the events of the last DANA do not repeat themselves.
