The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called on Monday, at the Summit of the Oceans of Nice (France), to ratify the treaty of the treaty of the Oceans (BBNJ, in English), adopted in 2023 and that only Spain has ratified the EU.

The president of the European Council, António Costa, recalled that since the EU they have ratified and support the treaty of the oceans – or high -seas – and “seven member states are already committed so that it can go into force.”

The president of the CE also announced that the first pilot version of a Tool -The Digital Twin Ocean (DTO)– which will allow “better to understand the ocean”, as it is a digital representation of the ocean body, and announced an initiative to observe the ocean.

«This will provide vital data to all who depend on the sea and contribute to make Europe a world leader in Oceanic Science, Technology and Security. For the sake of multilateralism, I ask all countries present here to join Europe in this mission, ”said the European leader.

For his part, the Portuguese minister spoke of the “triple planetary crisis for climate change, pollution and loss of biodiversity, which is increasingly water.”
