AFTER ANOTHER EPISODE OF ANIMAL VIOLENCE, WHICH FEATURED A POOR PITBULL NAMED AS THE PROTAGONIST to TIED TO A POLE AND BURNED ALIVE BY HIS OWN MASTER, A POOL OF FEMALE MAGISTRATES FROM PALERMO HAS DECIDED TO RISE AGAINST THE CRIMES OF WHICH OUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS ARE VICTIMS. THE INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL PROTECTION ORGANIZATION OIPA COMMENTS: «OTHER PROSECUTIONS FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE»
A rising tide of anti-animal horror: a pool of female magistrates in the trenches
The world is witnessing a worrying wave of horrors inflicted on animals, with increasingly heinous and shocking crimes. Hangings, poisonings, drownings become sad epilogues of defenseless creatures, victims of unbridled cruelty.
However, the recent case of to, a young pit bull, has reached levels of barbarism that defy belief. The poor dog was tied to a post and burned alive by its own owner in Palermo, unleashing an unprecedented wave of indignation, both on the part of animal rights associations and on the part of citizens and institutions.
The need to tackle these inhuman acts with firmness and determination could be realized thanks to a pool of female judges of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Palermo, which decided to dedicate itself specifically to crimes committed against animals.
OIPA supports the work of women judges: “other prosecutors’ offices should follow suit”
L’International Organization for Animal Protection (OIPA)expressed his gratitude to the prosecutor Maurizio de Lucia for the initiative undertaken, hoping that other prosecutor’s offices will follow this virtuous example. The working group is made up of four deputy prosecutors: Clio Di Guardo, Giulia Falchi, Maria Forti e Federica Scuderi.
The magistrates, under the coordination of the deputy prosecutor Ennio Petrigniwill address a wide range of animal-related crimes, ranging from clandestine dog fighting to illegal slaughter, from clandestine horse racing to the illegal trade of pets, up to the exploitation of horses in tourist carriages.
The OIPA complaint
In response, OIPA filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Palermo for mistreatment and killing of animals. The association will become a civil party in the trial against Aron’s killer and has asked the mayor of Palermo, Roberto Lagallato issue a prohibitory order that prevents the subject, as well as his family members and cohabitants, from keeping animals.
The International Animal Protection Organization, in congratulating the Palermo pool, declared itself ready to actively support this very important work.
The comment of the president of the association leaves no room for interpretation, Massimo Comparotto. «We await a tightening of penalties for crimes against animals, as promised by various political parties. Subjects who are cruel towards animals are dangerous subjects who can easily pass from animals to humans. The system should also take this into account.”.
Attention on this front is fundamental and the formation of this dedicated pool demonstrates the institutions’ growing commitment to combating animal abuse, a battle that OIPA hopes will become increasingly widespread and shared at a national level.
AnimaLiberAction activists are calling for harsher sentences
In recent days, too AnimaLiberAction had risen up, asking for a tightening of the law of 20 July 189/2004, “Provisions concerning the prohibition of mistreatment of animals, as well as their use in clandestine fights or unauthorized competitions”.
In a note, the president of the association, Gianluca Bisogno, he declared “As an association that represents the inviolable rights of animals and citizens who love and respect these creatures, we are collecting signatures, through our social channels, in’objective of presenting to Parliament 500 thousand names, 500 thousand voices who together with us demand a new, just society, in which, also in educational terms,’killing an animal is conceived as a very serious criminal action and as such punished, through exemplary penalties, to be created ad hoc.
To this end, we are asking for a parliamentary question to truly put an end to such barbarism.”.
A statue in memory of Aron
Pending developments, some activists have asked the Palermo municipal administration to erect a statue in memory of to in the suggestive Piazza delle Croci. Place where Carmelo Russo, nicknamed “swordsman”, committed the crime last January 6th. A very sad story that shook public opinion, revealing the unacceptable brutality inflicted on animals.
The proposal for a monument for Aron is not just a symbolic gesture, but a concrete commitment to preserve the memory of an innocent being who suffered an unjust fate.
